Wednesday, February 25, 2009 Granada, Spain
Up by 7:30 this morning down for breakfast and a little computer time before calling a cab to take us to the bus station for our trip to Granada.
We have found that catching a cab is the best thing when we are going to a bus or train station with our suitcases. Got on our bus with no problems….saw a lot of the Spain countryside, both level fields and mountains, with many acres of olive trees. Martha spotted some of the Don
Quixote windmills on the hillside but not quite quick enough for us to get our cameras out. Anyway it was a beautiful trip and I am looking forward to the return trip to Madrid on Sunday or Monday whichever we decide to do.
We watched the movie, The Thomas Crown Affair, on Martha’s new I Pod for the first 2 hours of the trip… made the time go fast.
On arrival in Granada we tried to get a cab but the first fellow did not speak English we did figure out that he was saying a car could not drive to the address that we were giving him. Another cabbie, who spoke some English, came to us and said that he could take us close to the Hostel but that we would have to walk a short distance up a street (more like a small alleyway)
To where our Hostel, Oasis Backpackers, was located. We went for this as figured it was our best option. We were a little uncertain when we got out of the taxi, paid our money, and started pulling our suitcases up this very small cobblestone walkway…. But then we saw a sign and an arrow for our Hostel. Checked into a second floor dorm for 6 with a bathroom but no big lockers only small ones that we can keep our computers etc in and will have to trust the rest of the stuff…. But then … everyone is in the same boat. We
have a girl from Boston in another bunk and we think, because of the unmade beds that we may have 2 guys in the end of the room. But the price is right 20 euros including breakfast.
As we had not eaten since breakfast, except for some nuts in our backpack, we set out to find a small snack to hold us until the Hostel dinner of pasta etc tonight at 9 pm for only 4 euros….. but when we ordered this chicken salad (Schaurma) in a wrap for only 3 e we figured they would be small…. Wrong we are both so full that we are forgoing the hostel dinner tonight and will look forward to sharing a meal with them on Friday. We are doing computers in the kitchen and she is cooking in the biggest wok I have ever seen and boy does it ever smell good. The nearby streets are so small and full of little shops .. it is very much a Moorish town with shops that look like they came out of Morocco. We have been trying to figure out the best way to get ourselves down to a major street for a cab when we leave… still not certain of just how we will go. Just up the alley is an old church that we may see if they have a mass in the morning as we missed out on Ash Wednesday because of a travel day. Will write more tomorrow.
