A Day for Exploring The Hills

Saturday, March 21, 2009 The best days are ones without plans
Today we had a thought to just go out and visit some more little villages during our last day for car trips. Tomorrow, our final day, we plan to stay in town for the large market, Sunday Mass, laundry and just getting ready to leave for Nice on Monday. Our first stop was in Apt, which is a large town where they were having a big market day…. No place to park… so off we went to find the little hilltop town of Saignon where we found a beautiful little church and cemetery and best of all the local WC. Leaving Saignon we made our way back to Apt hoping that some parking would be available so we could wander the market… but no such luck.
We did however see the circus on the edge of town and took some pictures of the animals that they had tied out to eat the grass along the edge of the road.
On down the road we went to Roussillon (Martha had tried to get me to go there the other day but it was late and I was ready to get home) so much to her delight we found the city of red earth, Roussilon about noon. It was very pretty and we found high on a hill a large Sun Dial which is why they sell a lot of sun dials in this town. We had a picnic lunch on the bridge eating our bagatte (bread) left over from last night, spreading it wilth the wonderful Basil, Cheese & Olive Oil mixture that we had purchased at the market yesterday.
Leaving Roussilon we took a miss turn and ended up on a wonderful cuvey little road going where…… we were not sure … but it was going in the right direction. Beautiful homes and vineyards filled our eyes with visions of Provence
as we wound our way down the mountain and then up again… to a little hillside town called Goult. Visited the local church, then reading the information boards saw that somewhere in this area was an old 15th century windmill. Martha asked if I was game to go find it…. Sure lets go, but as she headed for the car to go outside of town, I said “you know what, I think this windmill is right here in town” sure enough we got some information from a local and up we went to find the windmill in a higher part of town. We ended up walking the last little bit as we were gunshy about getting our car stuck again. We were rewarded as we walked thru a beautiful old stone arch by the sight of “The Windmill” I will post 2 pictures with this blog rather than doing a slide show so that you can see what I am talking about. The day couldn’t get any better than this so we figured it was time to head home. For the past two days we have been listening to wonderful music on Martha’s Ipod as it has a little speaker with it… today has been mostly French music and has really put us in a Provence mood. Looking forward to our last market day tomorrow. Au revoir
