April 17, 2009 "Be sure to check out Martha's Blog for Photo's"

When I closed out my blog yesterday I had thought that the rain was going to last all day… but it did slow down enough that we drove into Beaune to the local Laverie
So we could do up our laundry… so glad Martha has figured out these machines. They have only one machine where you put all the money in so once you realize that its pretty simple. On the way home we made a stop at the store to pick up more bread and a newer map. The one Martha had brought with her was from 2000 and since I was giving the directions I thought we needed a new map for me to read from…. At least I felt a little more confident with more current information. Back to the hotel for an evening of computer time, we purchased more time on the Orange Network, a few games of cards and reading our books. It’s good that we enjoy each other’s company as we have been together now 24/7 for about 66 days. We have learned to accept each other for our differences and seem to get along quite well with each other. Am sure Martha has enjoyed the few times that I have stayed in my room and she had the chance to go out with other people…. … and I on the other hand enjoyed myself with some special quiet time that I need to have now and then.

Today we are headed North for Reims with a one night stop at the Formule 1 in Chaumont. Our choice was, rather than taking the super highway, to stay on the scenic drive along the back roads going past many field of glorious yellow mustard plants, vineyards and green fields of spring wheat. We drove into one small town, Gemeaux, as we could see from the highway that it would make a pretty little side trip. North of Dijon we were looking for a WC stop when we saw a McDonalds sign. When I first started seeing fast food places from America here in Europe, I was somewhat dismayed….. but when you are on the road it sure is nice to know that when you pull into one of these places you will always find what you need…. It was photo time in the restroom when we spotted a tiny toilet and sink made for little children. Another McDonald favorite (the $ menu) was also available so we made use of it for our lunch.

Up the road a bit we went up and around the fortified walled town of Langres. Did not find it in Rick Steves book but think that if I were ever to find myself back in France I just might find the time to check out this town. Will definitely check it out on the internet as I am sure there must be a good story behind all those walls.

Drove right past our turn off for the hotel and into the town of Chaumont…. After a few turns we found our way back and got checked into our room for the night. The Formule One system is great for a low cost stay. Our private room for three has a double bed with a bunk over the top, TV (only in French), a desk and sink with the showers and toilets down the hall…. For only 30 euros per night…. Some nights it’s a little higher, but never more than 38 euros and we will be staying in them until April 28….. so it’s Au Revoir for tonight look forward to chatting with you again tomorrow.
