Today we explored and walked the streets of Nice. First we found our way to the Marc Chagall Museum. It’s a great museum with modern art that I really did like. He was an artist from Russia and most of his work reflects stories from the bible. It was very interesting to see his view of the different things that happened during the time of Christ and also stories from the Old Testament . I especially enjoyed his “The Creation of Man” and L’Exode. Best of all was the mosaic wall that was done outside over a pond of water. The center evokes the prophet Elijah in his chariot of fire with Chagall’s own addition of the 12 signs of the zodiac, which he uses to symbolize the hours of time, all of this is reflected in the pond. Nice thing was that we could take all the pictures that we wanted as long as we did not use our flash. Bad thing was we had to deal with 3 bus loads of tourists and several groups of school kids while touring the museum.
Leaving Marc Chagall we made our way over to the Englises (church) Orthodoxes Russes de St.Nicolas. A beautiful old Russian Cathedral with many steeples and onion shapped towers all in multi colors.. looking alittle out of place here in the land of olives and anchovies. The land for this church was donated by the widow of Czar Nicholas I, her home was torn down to build this church, in honor of her first love who died while visiting in Nice. Czar Nicholas II, her son, donated most of the money to build this church before he and his family were assassinated.
On the way back to our hostel Martha had fun trying to converse in French with a lady, about our age, in the small grocery store where we stopped to buy (our main food staples) bread and banana for lunch.
Back in our rooms its time to get ourselves and our luggage ready to leave on the train tomorrow for Rome. Hopefully we will have wifi at our new home… if not… we know that there is a McDonald’s nearby.
Arriederci …… (that’s Goodbye in Italian)
